Bumps, Bends, Mixed Up Plans

Chapter 4 in which we grumble about short term accommodation market

We did not book a place to stay for the first night, because we just did not know where and when we would be. It turns out that a lot of places listed on Booking are not happy to see customers after 10pm. Moreover, many of them don’t accept check-ins after 7 or even 6pm. We have already learned that early birds took over the world while owls were asleep, but really, 6pm?

We are not too picky. We have just basic needs: private bathroom, enough beds, a parking spot somewhere in the vicinity. From the first look it may seem that Booking offers plenty of options. However, when you exclude rooms with no private bathroom, rooms offering just one wide bed for three guests, rooms overpriced for no apparent reason, you end up with a choice of two or three places. After that you must make a decision quickly, because there are other travellers out there with similar demands. It is easy to find a room when the budget is unlimited or when it is strictly limited – just go with the cheapest option. Finding a decent room for reasonable money is a challenge.

Having said all that, we stayed in the first place still open at midnight in Pärnu about 125 kms from Tallinn.

Our second night was much more interesting, though. We are more than OK with a room in “Some Well Known Inn” (or even “Completely Unknown” with good reviews), but a strange place in the middle of nowhere is significantly more attractive.

The name “Gospodarstwo agroturystyczne Biebrzanska Goscina” speaks for itself. It is a farm, it is in Poland. When the paved road ended we understood that we were on the right path (spoiler alert: it is going to happen a lot). If we were experienced travel bloggers, we would have a ton of photos of the place, but we are not. The photo is taken from the official website.

The owner was really happy to see us and not because of the workplace policy. When we asked if he needed to see our documents, he honestly did not understand why he would need them.

Have you ever noticed how in the morning or in the evening someone pushes a button and switches on all the birds or cicadas at once? It was really quiet when we arrived, but then that someone turned on the pond with all the frogs.

The upper floor has separate rooms with private bathrooms and a shared rest area. In the morning the owner serves breakfast in the spacious kitchen on the ground floor. It is not your ordinary hotel breakfast with coffee, toast and fried eggs with sausage. Again, we did not take photos, we were raised in different times, when one could eat before taking a photo of the meal.

After the “beauty sleep” and the “most important meal of the day” we were back on the road. We still had about 40 hours to leave the Schengen Area.
