We were driving into the sunset to no particular address. Not for the first time. By the way, driving into the sunset is nowhere near as cool as movies picture it. The low sun shining right in the eye drives you crazy, sunglasses and sun visor do not help.
Certainly, by the time we entered Belgrade accommodation was booked. It was rated 8 out of 10 on Booking (very good!). Well, it was not bad, but it smelled like cigarettes, the price on Booking did not include city taxes, and cleaning fee was not obvious. Booking is turning into AirBnB, but with no way to instantly contact the host and ask questions if any, so look for the fine print and read it carefully. The apartment still would be alright if not located directly under the flight path of the Belgrade airport. A flight path that is quite busy from 5 in the morning till 1 late at night. At that point we started to suspect that the Universe did not really want us to stay in Serbia, and the navigation error that led us to Croatia was not actually an error. Meanwhile we had three days in Belgrade and a few matters to attend to.
A log book service aka oil and filters change was already overdue. It was Saturday, all “car services near me” turned out to be closed for the weekend. Well, changing engine oil and oil filter is not rocket science. Although, people with the right tools and equipment usually can do it quicker. Fortunately, an open workshop (it was BEO-CAR) appeared on the way to the auto parts store and saved us from the inconvenience.
After taking care of our car we went to Avala Tower to look at all of Belgrade at once from the highest point… and we failed… to reach the tower. The navigation app did not recognize the newly built roads, in a standstill traffic jam we made a wrong turn, and the congestion to make a U-turn was even longer. On the next day the same roads were completely empty and we had finally got to the top.
The view is astonishing. Of course, there is a cafe on the very top, of course it is overpriced, still, the coffee and the ice-cream are good.
The entry fee to the tower for two adults and one child is about 6€, so definitely worth it.
Gold Apartments – we do not recommend it.
