In Brasov we lived not far from the Union Square (Piața Unirii), so obviously, we started from there. Google Maps remembers the time when the whole square was paved with tarmac and used for parking cars. Nowadays it is a pedestrian area. Cobblestone better suits the buildings surrounding the square and the XVI century Saint Nicholas Church (Biserica Sfântul Nicolae). The church is orthodox, although it is built in gothic style. The first Romanian school (now a museum) is located on its grounds.
There are a couple of nice places to eat. Restaurant “Casa Romaneasca” for a proper meal and Woof Street Cafe for coffee and cake. Nothing special, but it is dog friendly, and paw prints on the table, napkins and cups give adorable personal touch.
Speaking about churches… You can not miss the Black Church (Biserica Neagră) when in Brasov. It is huge and has a capacity to accommodate 5000 (five thousand) people at once. Let’s hope that you would be able to avoid such a crowd 🙂 Most of the days the Black Church is open for visits 12-6 pm (has longer hours during high season) Tickets are sold in the gift shop across from the entrance. Entry fee is around 3€ for adults and 1€ for children.
Once you are out of the Black Church just go further to the Council Square and the Republic Street (Strada Republicii) with its vintage architecture, shops and all kinds of restaurants. You might take a walk in the park behind the old fortress walls and you should take a cable car to the top of the mountain (to the Hollywood Brasov sign) and take a look at Brasov from above.
And when you get bored just brasoving around, go and explore nearby castles starting with Bran Castle.
