We had a plan to visit Stromboli island, but we missed our ferry (read about it in the next chapter). However, we were determined to see a volcano, so we did. Sicily has an active volcano of its own – the magnificent Mount Etna.
Etna is one of three active volcanoes in Italy and is in almost constant state of activity. Its current height is 3357 m (11014 ft), but it changes with eruptions. In 2021 Etna grew about 30m (100 ft). There is a base camp at the height of 1900 m (6200 ft) reachable by car. There are cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops in the camp. A cable car or a 4×4 bus can take you higher. The strong and brave can just walk up to the height of 2700m (8858 ft).
We went to Mount Etna on a sunny March day and it was +15C down near the sea. In the base camp it was about zero C. The strong wind was, literally, knocking down.
The cable car did not work due to the harsh weather. The only craters we were able to see were the small Silvestri Craters situated on the south side near the base camp.
On the next day Etna reminded us that it is an active volcano.
After Etna we continued our volcano tour and went to Stromboli.
