Chapter 27 in which we explore Scărișoara Cave and try traditional fast food

July 2022 in Romania was sunny and hot. We did not have an air conditioner in the apartment we rented in Cluj, so we decided to go to a cold place. There is a glacier cave in Transylvania. Even in summer it is so cold in the cave, that ice does not melt, and the ground near the entrance is covered with snow.

As we have, probably, already mentioned somewhere, we are not early birds. The cave was two and a half hours drive from our place, and we started after midday just before (or after) the lunchtime. Soon we felt hungry, but there wasn’t any food around, as we were driving through fields and forests. And then in a small village of just a few houses Ksenia spotted a sign which promised Plăcinte and Langoși.

While we did not know what plăcinte was (it is a small pie), Ksenia knew for sure that langoși was food. Langos is a deep fried flatbread with some toppings.

Denis had his with Nutella, and we chose cascaval (local Romanian cheese).

Just before 4pm we arrived at the Scarisoara cave information centre. Take into account that you cannot drive straight to the cave gate, you will have to walk up from the parking (10-20 minutes, depending on how fit you are). The last entry time is 5:30pm, the guide takes everybody down to the cave and tells a story… in Romanian. You can arrange a tour in English, but you must do it in advance.

The entrance itself is at the bottom of a deep natural well. There are stairs,

and stairs, and a little more stairs.

The cave is pretty big and nice, but we wouldn’t say that it was worth a half-day trip. However, you wouldn’t regret visiting it, if you happen to be nearby.

Remember, that you will have to walk all the stairs back to the top.
